Jayapataka Swami, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada, was one of my earliest inspirations in my service to Food for Life, the worldwide food relief program Srila Prabhupada founded. As a monk in the 80s and 90s, I wrote to him many times for guidance, first through letters and later by email, and whenever he saw me he told me, \u201cPlease tell me how I can help you.\u201d He loved that I was working to expand the distribution of prasadam (sanctified food), because he understood its power to create peace and unity in the world, and he also knew how deeply it mattered to his guru, Srila Prabhupada, the founder of Food for Life.<\/div>\r\n
In this short video, Jayapataka Swami shares the origin story of Food for Life: how Srila Prabhupada witnessed poor village children in India fighting with dogs over scraps of food, and how that one incident seeded the idea of a worldwide food relief program that now serves up to 3 MILLION meals a day! Yes, that is over 2000 meals a minute, or 35 meals every second. It is truly amazing, and Food for Life all started in 1974. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Food for Life, and I am so honoured to be part of its growth from that single moment in India into a global movement.<\/div>\r\n
