I was a bit disappointed. The Life of Pi movie has some visually stunning 3D scenes, and the story itself is quite fantastic. The narrator, Pi, does a great job, and so too does the young boy who plays the main role. But at times the movie just dragged on and I found myself asking, "When is this going to end?" Normally, if I'm watching something I am thoroughly enjoying, I'm like: "Wow, what's going to happen next?" With Life of Pi, the storyline seemed pretty obvious to me: the ship sinks, some people survive, and the challenging circumstances lead to lots of introspection.

But the real killer for me was the ending when the narrator, Pi, tells another side of his story. Ouch, in just 3 minutes Pi destroyed all the wonder and fantasy I had enjoyed of his adventure, and I now had to consider that everything he narrated maybe nothing more than his fanciful retelling of a fable from the Hitopadesh. Also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Panchatantra_Stories

And in one sense that isn't so bad. The story did have moral instruction: Depend on God; have faith and all will be ok in the end. But when I go to see a movie and have certain expectations and then throughout the movie I am led to believe a certain ideal, but then right at the end I'm fed a stinging doubt that the "ideal" is most likely bullshit, that sort of hurts.

I'd give this a 6 out of 10. Sorry for spoiling it for those that haven't gone. Just saying. You might like it.

FAQ

Q: What did I rate Life of Pi 3D, and was I disappointed?

A: I gave Life of Pi 3D a 6 out of 10, and yes, I was a bit disappointed. Some scenes were visually stunning and the story was quite fantastic. But at times the movie dragged, and I caught myself asking, "When is this going to end?"

Q: Why did the ending of Life of Pi bother me so much?

A: The ending hurt most, when Pi tells another side of his story. In just 3 minutes, he destroyed all the wonder and fantasy I had enjoyed of his adventure. I was left wondering whether everything he narrated was just a fanciful retelling of a fable.

Q: How do I connect Life of Pi to the Hitopadesh and the Panchatantra stories?

A: After the twist ending, I had to consider that Pi's narration might be nothing more than his retelling of a fable from the Hitopadesh. I also point readers to the list of Panchatantra stories for related context. To me, this framing turned the adventure into something closer to a moral tale.

Q: What moral lesson did I take from Life of Pi?

A: I felt the story carried clear moral instruction: depend on God, have faith, and all will be ok in the end. In one sense, I don't think that's so bad. But being led to believe an ideal and then doubting it right at the end really stung.

Q: Did I find the Life of Pi storyline predictable?

A: Yes, the storyline seemed pretty obvious to me. A ship sinks, some people survive, and the challenging circumstances lead to lots of introspection. When I'm truly enjoying a film, I'm wondering what happens next, and here I mostly wasn't.
["Professional","Informative
["no overclaiming
["Article","FAQPage
["title","meta","outline","body_patch","faq","schema_ld","summary
2026-10-01T15:15:50-05:00
1.0"}
